Knowledge of the history of the South African Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) sets the stage for this pillar to explore the need for competent and active participation with the ESI, value and respect for diversity, and commitment to sustainable energy development.

This pillar will also look at the background and progress made on many significant national plans that will have a powerful impact on the future of the energy landscape, such as the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and the National Development Plan (NDP).

We also discuss the 2050 end state vision for the South African ESI that will likely shape the future of electricity security, access and affordability.

Other learning opportunities presented by this pillar include South Africa’s energy planning methodology and Eskom’s role in the end state vision.
